The problem with having an over powerful president like Putin is that when he goes (likely at age 95 looking at current progress) is that when he dies the countries in Russia will seek to break apart from the federation and wars will start.

Putin might very well plan for this because it will look like the country was held together by him.

What is really needed is transfers of powers while he lives.

Well the US has democracy, but in the last 180 years only TWO parties have held power and ONLY candidates belonging to those same parties held the presidency. So, what is the big difference from what Putin has done and the western political system? Oh yes you get a different person calling himself president in the US every four or eight years. So what? regardless who you vote into power you get the same result. Look at Trump he promised to stop all those wars; has he? No.
They keep on telling you democracy means change – no it does not. Its a myth.
