They were armed by the Yanks but they weren't created by them. They were an already-existing insurgency against Soviet occupation. If you think the insurgency was created out of nothing by the States, you are completely beyond help, completely clueless about how life functions.

You know, world police, we want to cut out hunger, we want to help evryone!!! I'll tell you why, because if there's isn't anything to gain financially or some type of military advantage or objective, then they stay away. With respect to Afghanisatan, if you aren't aware, they have tremendously high oil reserves still buried in that country, and this isn't including any of the other major natural resources. This is untapped and they're anticipated to start drilling soon if they can get a time out from the conflicts - of course, the US won't allow if they can help it.

So, in a nutshell, if there is oil or natural resources, the US is there... if friend, they buy it, or if foe, they try to take it!

You're having a problem with strength and tense. The US did not make them "what they are." This is more acccurate: the US "helped" make them what they "were." They did not teach them Islamist view of any type; and they only helped them be proficient resistance fighters back then.
