Russia did not decide to arm or train the so called Free Syrian army. The US supported armed insurrection in Syria to remove Assad because the Jews wanted to remove him so they could control the region.
The US supported ISIS in its efforts to remove Assad because the US did and still does not have the military strength to take on even Syria after their debacles in Afghanistan and Iraq. The US military losses in Iraq alone were 10,000 plus thousands injured and maimed.
The Russians will not have to deal with them but Assad will and he will bring them to heel.
