Sadly, the 102 million is on the mark.
Teachers in Oklahoma went on strike on 4 April 2018 to call for better funding of education and salaries. Teachers in Kentucky and Arizona followed.

These teachers are so drastically underpaid they are forced to donate plasma, work multiple jobs, and go to food pantries to provide for their families. They live on $33,000 per year.

US now has an abundance of jobs at either $7.50 ($15,600 yearly) or $12.50 an hour ($26,000. These are working poor rates. They barely earn enough to cover rent, utilities, cloths and food. Last year I drove through middle America and I can tell you that good food is not cheap, but crap is. US household debt is enormous due people borrowing because household savings were wiped out after the GFC in 2008. Today, 75% of fulltime workers live from pay-day to pay-day.

Proper official Stats on poverty are like stats on unemployment and if you believe that the US has only 4% unemployed then the tooth fairy lives on the moon. You only have to “work” one hour per week and your not unemployed. You stop looking for work and you are off government records.

Yep working for $12.50 an hour is living high on the hog. The operative words are “as long as you work hard to manage it”.

That’s working two or three jobs. Maybe you are right I could be out of step here since I find working more than one job very odd and don’t count that as a good life.

Half millions of Serbians live in proverty and this guy Vucic goes to Russia buys old junk Military aquipmen plane and tanks he should stat fitting poor serbs with food
(Bob, 21 October 2018 08:07)

Please do the math. I can't say much about military, but "500K Serbs living in poverty" is a very interesting topic.

As it was mentioned, 400K out of them are children.

That means, we are talking about roughly 40000 families. Correct?

100 = 500 - 400, so there are 100K adults affected. Deduct elderly in special homes, mentally ill, homeless and so on - you will get propably 40K adult couples.

These 40K adult couples have 400K children. Even if you deduct children in orphanages, homeless, etc - you will still have 9 kids / family.

This is obvious, who in Serbia has 9 kids in family: Roms and some Albanians. You can remove Albanians because even if they have no income, their relatives worldwide help them, they do not live in poverty.

Remains: 40,000 Rom families with 9+ kids in family.

You can give them as much food as you like - that is not a solution.
Try to give them jobs they ready to take (good luck!) and provide them housing while not upsetting the neighbors (good luck!)

Both were tried in Serbia and all it's neighbors and nearly all experiments failed.

Honcho,

I can't comment on corporate America because I have always worked for small businesses that are rooted in rural communities, what sociologists would call "sectarian Protestant" communities. My experience has been quite positive. At times, I had negative feelings toward the owners but having become a business owner myself the financial risks, obligations, worries, and time required to keep everything running smoothly...there is a significant price to pay to increase earnings.

JS

pre 5 godina

Honcho,

"...regarding salaries, corporate BS and other "niceties" of the life in the States SJ is largely correct. This is why I am not there."

By the looks of things, corporate life in Serbia is just as corrupt. Considering that businessmen bought state industries for a little bit of nothing, turned around and sold the tools for more than they paid for the company, and immediately closed the business, I wouldn't be surprised if corporate culture here is worse than in the States.

"Don't get me wrong: the life in the States is much better, than in this part of the Europe... as long as you work hard to manage it."

Everyone knows this except sj.

"The best deal is to be American outside of America...All my Dollars have better value to be spent somewhere else."

Because of the strength of the dollar.

"One more downside for JS: this fact is known for some more Americans...Lucky you if they do not have any political influence...One more hint: if you go to any bar in Southern Serbia infested be these parasites - I am not there. Last time I visited a bar was maybe few decades ago... for a few minutes. But you can see these expat "experts" everywhere in Belgrade, Moscow, Berlin, etc."

I don't go to bars and I don't live in a city, so I don't know. I haven't met any on the street when I was in town.

Things are actually moving at a much faster pace in Kosova’s favor under the Trump years! Thank you Serbia for supporting Trump! We loved the Trump shirts that were made that seslj made his goons wear:)

Regarding Austria, their weapons will be kindly appreciated when they begin selling them and donating them to the Kosovar ARMY. The nice part about starting out small with a 5000 man army will be the ability to outfit them with the BEST weapons the world has to offer and training. From there, they will take that knowledge the West has provided in training and tactics, then become trainers for the enlargement of the Armed Forces in the future. Serbia has nothing to fear though because they want peace with their neighbors and would never invade or start trouble in Kosova, right?

Jokes on you Serbia. While you “wait” for the right time to invade, Kosovars will be preparing, training and building up their Armed Forces. Future generations of Serbs will not be willing to die for Kosova because they will not identify with it... However, everyone knows Kosovar Albanians are willing to put heir lives on the line for their homeland.

Greetings from Chicago fellow Albanians🤝

(sj, 18 October 2018 11:12)

Sorry, the number of 102 million is absolutely incorrect.
It is correct that people live much worse than what would be possible.
It is correct that the corporate life is horrific.
It is correct that there is a lot of bubble and that marketing + half-literate managers have way to much to say.

The roots of the ruined corporate culture are in 19th century and that sucks in 21st.

Will America re-invent itself or not probably not my business, I hope to retire.

Honcho

pre 5 godina

To JS ans SJ.

Apologies, neither of you has to deal with U.S. corporate (non)culture, this is my ordeal since early 90-s.

In many things I do not agree with either of you - but regarding salaries, corporate BS and other "niceties" of the life in the States SJ is largely correct. This is why I am not there.

Don't get me wrong: the life in the States is much better, than in this part of the Europe... as long as you work hard to manage it.

The best deal is to be American outside of America. Somehow, by some stupidity it is encouraged. You do not need to ask me twice - I am happy to be outside of it and as long as I don't need to go there I am not forcing it. All my Dollars have better value to be spent somewhere else.

One downside: you have to be extremely lucky to get into that situation.

One more downside for JS: this fact is known for some more Americans. Many of them are tricky, but not particularly gifted people. You can see them as American "expats" all over Serbia, Ukraine, Russia, etc.
They try to stay where they are - at any price.

Lucky you if they do not have any political influence. If that's not the case - they poison everything around them. The expat Brits aren't much better either.

One more hint: if you go to any bar in Southern Serbia infested be these parasites - I am not there. Last time I visited a bar was maybe few decades ago... for a few minutes. But you can see these expat "experts" everywhere in Belgrade, Moscow, Berlin, etc.

In the US the last time wage earners got a real wage rise was in the 1980s. That’s my point.
(sj, 20 October 2018 00:22)

This is correct. Few days ago I did read the message of the president of our company to the employees and I got furious. She is a completely бездарная пизда - who advanced in the corporate hierarchy most likely due the body part I just did mention.

No profit share for employees - event that the company is doing OK.

I would fire her in any minute - and rather appoint the cat of my neighbor (less damage + more brains).

But hey, I am in unique situation (no taxes paid, not a single Cent contributed to U.S. medical and food industry) and I am enjoying that I don't even need to be in the U.S.

Would I be under different circumstances - my life would be not sustainable. But as far as today - I am fine.

Can't wait until I retire, every time I think about U.S. corporate culture I vomit.

@sj: wow 6 months in 2015. I am impressed. Since January 2015 I spend around 35 months in serbia and quiet a lot before.

As you may know we live in a world were trade over borders is a normal thing. Importing food from other countries does not say anything about if peoole in country is rich or poor.
You know there are many parameters. Like costs/unit, median income instead of average income, social system, infrastructure,...
I dislike the government a lot but at least infrastructure projects are on the way.
The social fairness on the other side is a topic they avoid, like it is not on there agenda.

My little Albo I spent 6 months in Serbia in 2015. So I’d say I am qualified to say a few things about that country.
I know for a fact that Serbia also at times imports potatoes from Bulgaria and milk simply because the number of Serbian farmers are falling and the Government has only recently started to provide assistance for young people to stay in villages rather than leave for the cities. That’s why I know people like JS does not live in Serbia.
I do know what is written in certain newspapers because I can read which I cant say the same for you.

Honcho

pre 5 godina

B92,

Please re-read what you wrote and all the reactions.

What was written:

500K Serb citizens and among them 400K Serb children live in absolute poverty.

Do the math, please. Obviously, if a child is in absolute poverty - so it child's family. From the article we see, there are 100K adults in Serbia who live in absolute poverty: 500 - 400 = 100.

The minority of children are in orphanages. Serbian orphanage is no fun - but that is something else.

Same about adults in elderly homes or under special care.

A better wording would be: 'roughly 45000 Serbian families live in absolute poverty'.

How many children these families do have?

The same math gives us at least nine, as there are 400000 children in question.

The math of this barely adds. The only logical conclusion I do see if we state:

'The majority of Serbian Rom population lives in absolute poverty'.

Which is essentially correct.

The article misses much more.

As Sken 1444 many times wrote here: the food prices in the region are higher, than in the West. The conditions of regular people are much worse. Everyone and their dog dreams how to immigrate.

This is not restricted to Serbia.

From certain point of vew - everyone in the region lives in poverty.

Isn't the government saying that economy grows and workers need to be imported?
Or is it growing and some rich are living on the back of the labours? Do not forget minimum salaries are below chinas plus many people have not even social security.
Low salaries comparing to other countries would not be a problem if it is enough to pay your bills and buy food from it. How many retired people would starve without support from their children?
Flat tax is one of the crimes against labour with low income. Considering value added tax they pay in percentage more tax than people like Miskovic. And he would not have that much money without so many people working for low money for him.
Before somebody screams about bad communist idea. There are western states that have this kind of tax system to keep the social peace.

You may visit Shutka in Skopje.

Honcho

And we're supposed to believe that he is a commercial banker! Yes, they all have plenty of time to sit at a desk waiting for the next b92 article so that they can post the first response to it! But I do believe that he works at a commercial bank...sweeping the floors! :)
(JS, 18 October 2018 12:02)

Let's be fair. After 25 years working for the bank, most likely he is trusted with managerial responsibilities in bank's mop-an-bucket department. I bet he has reached the master mopper title.

Our watermelons grow on our ground like many other fruits, maybe sj has no place to grow fruits himself or he has no idea about that. At lesst he knows what is written in certain newspapers. :)

I am pretty sure that half a million of absolutely poor Serbs lifts the bar to European level now.

The region is to small field for Serbia's achievements!

You stop looking for work and you are off government records.

sj

Yep working for $12.50 an hour is living high on the hog. The operative words are “as long as you work hard to manage it”.

That’s working two or three jobs. Maybe you are right I could be out of step here since I find working more than one job very odd and don’t count that as a good life.

Honcho

what it is amazing is that the US has 102 million living on or below the poverty line and very little is mentioned in the "free" western press of this fact. That millions live off food coupons and of course your famous tent cities.

SJ so your argument for this is that this news is 10 years and a rerun of an old article. Do you see the stupidity in these. Because somebody said 10 years ago half a million people where poor, you cant Say the same to day? Your concern should be what has the goverment done in these 10 year to eradicate poverty and or how will these look like in 10 years instead of only "Kosovo je Srbija" do those parents who send their children to bed every night at bed care who Kosovo belongs to? Or do the family to the man who took his life over a debt to electric company come back to life og Kosovo becomes Serbia? Istead of wasting time with Something thats not in their control, they should start taking ofthe country and people who i left in Serbia. Kosovo is gone and Today we took the first step in creating an army. And this article will probably not get any attention Even though it is more importent and near Serb everyday life.

And it gets worse every year. The west was a haven but not today."

@sj: wow 6 months in 2015. I am impressed. Since January 2015 I spend around 35 months in serbia and quiet a lot before.

As you may know we live in a world were trade over borders is a normal thing. Importing food from other countries does not say anything about if peoole in country is rich or poor.
You know there are many parameters. Like costs/unit, median income instead of average income, social system, infrastructure,...
I dislike the government a lot but at least infrastructure projects are on the way.
The social fairness on the other side is a topic they avoid, like it is not on there agenda.

JS

Because of the strength of the dollar.
