"EU would not be able to defend itself without NATO"

Jens Stoltenbeg has warned that the EU would not be able to defend itself without NATO and two key allies outside the EU - the US and the UK.

Given that most of the EU countries are in NATO, they are already well protected without the EU organisation being explicitly involved.

The EU does not have a satisfactory democratic structure at its head (I would never want an appointee like a Junker to have any direct role in using an army); how could it ever be properly accountable? At least NATO is answerable directly to democratically elected presidents and prime ministers - having to go through the EU to get to them would be very unhealthy. And needlessly complicated.

The EU should never have an army.
