B92 has launched a campaign to secure the purchase of a mobile digital mammography unit. While there are some 40 mammography machines in state-run hospitals, and a further ten in private clinics, most of these, according to experts, are below the technological level necessary for modern diagnostics. B92 in breast cancer prevention campaign Some 13,000 checkups are done annually at the Institute of Oncology and Radiology in Belgrade, but its capacities are still insufficient, leading to cases of women with suspected malignant breast cancer waiting for up to five months to undergo mammography. While mammography in general has been accepted as a diagnostic procedure that reduces mortality from breast cancer due to early discovery of the disease, doctors prefer to use digital machines, since they give more precise results, and subject patients to less radiation. The Institute hopes for at least three of the leading Serbian health care institutions to receive such units. B92's new humanitarian campaign is precisely to gather funds necessary to buy Serbia's first mobile digital mammography unit. The cost of the machine exceeds EUR 500,000. "This is a very large sum, but we are optimistic and believe that we'll be able to raise the money by the end of the summer. The goal of the campaign is to have the machine available to the Institute and to the women of Serbia as soon as possible," B92 Campaigns Manager Gordan Paunovic explained. This small mobile hospital will be able to reach the most remote parts of the country, and provide women with early diagnostics – the key to combating the often deadly disease.
