Two candidates declare victory in Montenegrin elections

Both incumbent Filip Vujanović and his challenger Miodrag Lekić late on Sunday declared victory in the presidential elections in Montenegro.

PODGORICA Both incumbent Filip Vujanovic and his challenger Miodrag Lekic late on Sunday declared victory in the presidential elections in Montenegro. The State Election Commission, which is yet to make a statement, will have the last word, while according to the local media, international observers will on Monday present their preliminary report. Two candidates declare victory in Montenegrin elections Vujanovic ran on the ticket of the ruling DPS party and said that he won 51.3 percent of the votes, while Lekic received 48.7 percent. Vujanovic said that his victory "cannot be brought into question". DPS leader and Montenegrin PM Milo Djukanovic congratulated him on the election victory. However, Lekic said that he had won 50.5 percent against Vujanovic's 49.5 percent, and told reporters in Podgorica that Vujanovic's statement represented "a coup". Lekic urged his supporters to show restraint and said he and his coalition "would not recognize theft". According to the local media 64 percent of Montenegro's 511,405 eligible voters turned out to cast their ballots on Sunday.
