Two former members of the Zemun Clan criminal group last night attempted to escape their detention union in Belgrade, local media are reporting. According to Belgrade-based Prva TV, Sretnko Kalinic and Zeljko Milovanovic cut the bars on the window of their cell at around 05:30 CET, and jumped into the District Prison yard. It was also reported that members of MUP's Gendarmerie unit prevented the escape of Kalinic and Milovanovic. Kalinic was arrested in Croatia and extradited to Serbia after spending years in hinding. He was previously sentenced in absentia to 40 years for his involvement in the 2003 assassination of PM Zoran Djindjic. A court in Belgrade last year granted him a retrial. Zemun Clan members attempt escape

The Administration for the Execution of Penitentiary Sanctions confirmed the incident this morning.

It was also reported that members of MUP's Gendarmerie unit prevented the escape of Kalinić and Milovanović.

Kalinić was arrested in Croatia and extradited to Serbia after spending years in hinding. He was previously sentenced in absentia to 40 years for his involvement in the 2003 assassination of PM Zoran Đinđić.

A court in Belgrade last year granted him a retrial.

Željko Milovanović was arrested for the murder of Croatian journalist and publisher Ivo Pukanić.
