UNMIK preparing its departure
After meeting with Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku, Petersen said that he has been working for a full year on lessening the amount of responsibilities UNMIK has in the region.“This is a logical thing, because we are preparing to leave Kosovo once the status is defined.” Petersen said.
He explained that the UN’s Resolution 1244 will lose its relevance once the UN adopts a new resolution that confirms the future status of Kosovo.
“You have probably noticed that the prime minister has the last say at the meetings. This also goes for the president, and that is the way it should remain.” Petersen said.
The UNMIK mission in Kosovo was established with the adoption of Resolution 1244 by the UN Security Council on June 10, 1999.
