i was reading all the comments and you can put them in two columns, i.e., 1) pro albanian 2) pro serbian. it is clear that the 2 sides will take a long long time to mend their hatreds against each other. the fact of the matter is, the multi-etchnic society has not been created. being independent with this scenario will deal the minority a great discrimination. so, UN or any other international entity needs to babysit them for sometime.

unmik proved to be incapable of anything. they just isolate themselves in their camps and receive their $3000/day paycheks! The economy is getting worse and worse, and politically it's been a mess. The sooner we will be independent, the sooner we will be free to take charge and care of ourselves. If the majority in Kosovo is OK, they wouldn't need to be reminded everyday of their anguish, they're state of insecurity about the future, of the past.

Kosovo is not ready to be left on its own. Somebody on the ground truly knows that fear, hate and apprehension lies in the heart of the majority. Imagine a football game without a referee and there will be chaos.

Soeren Jessen Petersen suggests he has the right to pontificate and dictate what the United Nations will do, just as Agim Ceku thinks he can dictate what Serbia needs to do.
These two unprofessional desperate men spread propaganda and uncertainty.
If Jessen Petersen is spreading rumours that UNMIK will leave he must also announce who is staying and who is intending to replace UNMIK. Is Jessen Petersen suggesting that the Serbian military now has the right to protect its Serbian population in the province of Kosovo and Metohija from barbaric acts of stoning, injuries and killing by ethnic Albanian terror groups.
The International Community is obligated to reassure the Serbs living in Kosovo and Metohija, province of Serbia that they will be protected from all discrimination and physical harm.
If political organs are showing signs of deception it is imperative that the World Christian Church intervenes to protect its suffering people.

It is strange how everybody is afraid of the vicitims, the ones that were under pressure (Serbian pressure during Yugoslavia and International pressure after 1999).
Anyway, UNMIK was supposed and is leaving now. You can say whatever you want. KOSOVA is independent. We are only waiting to satisfy the World and Serbia once again, and forever!
THE INDEPENDENCE OF KOSOVA, THE ONLY WAY FOR THE PEACE IN THE BALKANS!

If the UN pulls out, you will have the balance of Kosovo Serbs wiped out by radicals from the Albanains. March 17th 2004 will be nothing. The Albanian Government has promised that the minorities will be allowed to live in peace, but they have not delivered on there promise yet. My family's houses were burnt and destroyed on 17th of March, when they were rebuilt my family was threatend and forced to sell. These people are good christian people that had worked hard all their lives for what they had... now they have nothing. Allowing Albanains to have independence of Kosovo will be signing a death warrant for all minorities.

Once again the UN has proved a failure at nation building. The longer they remain in Kosovo the more farcical the situation will become. Now those involved have "feathered their nests" they are ready to leave the roost. Good riddance!!!! Time for the EU to come in and do the job properly!!!

Could be worse than E. Timor, look what's happening right now ! But don't forget NATO troops will stay and UN will be replaced by European Union administration. Independence? Which independence? Brussels will have the last say on all major issues...

The Kosovo Albanians have not demonstrated any ability to halt attacks on minorities or any desire to restore property and encourage refugee return. This fact would normally necessitate an international (UNMIK) presense, but UNMIK has been completely powerless and ineffective in stopping the reverse ethnic cleansing. UNMIK should go and perhaps an EU force should step in an remain until the Serbian enclaves/cantons/communities can be politically seperated from the cancer of corruption and chaos that is Kosovo.

the first 2 comments i dont agree because it still not the right time for kosovo to be independent. it is legally part of serbia. if the UN will make a mistake in granting independence, it will create domino effect to other separatist groups in the world over.

Sir, but kosovo wants its own state so the UN should leave after the status has been agreeded upon. Why stay longer than they must. This is not East Timor this is kosovo. I believe citizens of this so to be country will work together for peace and will prosper.

i dont think it is a good idea for UN to leave right after "status" as this will create chaotic repercussions. look at whats happening in east timor now. it takes long time for a new state specially a small one to stand in its own. some turmoils will occur within the country itself for power struggle.
