Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially informed the country's parliament and government on the request of Crimea to join Russia.

Putin informs parliament about Crimea's application

As stated, Putin, in line with the Russian Constitution, informed both houses of the Russian parliament and the government. Today the president will announce a decision on the request filed by Crimea.

The Supreme Soviet (assembly) of Crimea adopted a resolution on independence on Monday and asked Russia for admission of the Republic of Crimea to the Russian Federation as a federal subject enjoying the status of a republic.

According the the final results of the referendum on Crimea's status, 96.77 percent of those who turned out voted in favor of its unification with Russia, while 2.51 percent were in favor of the territory remaining a part of Ukraine.

On Monday, Putin signed a decree by which Russia recognized Crimea as independent.
