Hundreds of thousands of people rallied in central Cairo, calling for for President Hosni Mubarak to give up power. Mubarak said that he will not run for presidency again, but also that he will not step down before September election. Mohammed ElBaradei and the protesters in Egypt who continued their demonstrations on Wednesday did not accept Mubarak’s promise that he will not seek re-election in September, and demanded that he step down right away. ElBaradei told CNN that Mubarak did not manage to respond to protesters’ demands, and that his promise not to stand again for the presidency was an act of deception. If Mubarak did not heed the call to leave power, his life could be in danger, ElBaradei warned. Mubarak said Tuesday night that he does not plan to participate in the September election, but that he will never leave from Egypt. In a broadcast statement he promised constitutional reforms, and pointed out that he wants to remain on his position by the end of his term. American President Barack Obama told Mubarak on Tuesday that a transition of power in his country must begin now, in that way clearly withdrawing Washington’s support to its closest ally in Arab world, the New York Times reported.
