ZLATIBOR, BELGRADE A fire on Cigota Peak on Mt. Zlatibor in western Serbia, which was localized last night, started spreading again due to strong wind. The Serbian Police (MUP) Fire and Rescue Unit hopes its member will put the fire under control in the next several hours since the wind has calmed down. Wildfire on Mt. Zlatibor spreads MUP’s Fire and Rescue Unit Chief Goran Nikolic is convinced that the fire will be localized in about two hours. “A fire on Mt. Tara was localized last night,” he said and added that several smaller fires were still burning but that they would be put out soon. 115 firefighters from the entire Serbia are taking part in the operation. A Russian and a Serbian helicopter helped fight the fire on Mt. Zlatibor yesterday. “A Beriev 200 water bomber will arrive from Russia to Serbia on Saturday to help fight fires,” Serbia's Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Friday. He told Tanjug he had agreed with Russia's Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Puchkov for the plane to help fight wildfires not only in the next few days, but to stay in Serbia until mid-October. “Beriev 200 can carry 12,000 liters of water and its help will be more than welcome,” Dacic noted. He pointed out that the aircraft was already in Serbia in 2011, helping extinguish fires. There are fires in Serbia in a number of locations, mostly in mountain and forest regions, and firefighting units are trying to put them under control. More than 200 fires were registered in the last two days. There have been no casualties in the fires, mostly because of quick reactions from the firefighting and rescue services, and all the available resources of the MUP are in the field. Emergency Situations Sector Chief Predrag Maric said new fires could be expected in the next few days because of rising temperatures. (Tanjug) B92 Tanjug
