Students may request rector’s resignation

The Faculty of Philology and the Faculty of Philosophy are still blocked and students have announced a possibility that they will call on the rector to resign.

The Faculty of Philology and the Faculty of Philosophy are still blocked and students have announced a possibility that they will call on the rector to resign. Two incidents happened on Saturday evening – a torch was thrown into the Faculty of Philosophy and a group of men, who were described as “skinheads” by witnesses, attempted to enter the Faculty of Philology. Students may request rector’s resignation The students told Beta news agency that they will continue to block the two faculties “despite all the attempts to stop the blockade”. Belgrade University Rector Branko Kovacevic said earlier that the protest at the Faculty of Philology was a political protest of Marks21 organization and called on the state to “stop the circus” and on students to go back to classes. The rector stressed that Marks21 members were threatening students and professors and expressed concern that “some incident”, such as setting buildings on fire, could happen. A Faculty of Philosophy Plenum member said that the rector had provoked the last night’s incident with his statement. “We are considering the possibility to request Rector Kovacevic’s resignation because of it,” he pointed out. The students told Beta news agency that they will continue to block the two faculties “despite all the attempts to stop the blockade”.

Belgrade University Rector Branko Kovačević said earlier that the protest at the Faculty of Philology was a political protest of Marks21 organization and called on the state to “stop the circus” and on students to go back to classes.

The rector stressed that Marks21 members were threatening students and professors and expressed concern that “some incident”, such as setting buildings on fire, could happen.

A Faculty of Philosophy Plenum member said that the rector had provoked the last night’s incident with his statement.

“We are considering the possibility to request Rector Kovačević’s resignation because of it,” he pointed out.
