Average age increasing in Serbia

A Health Ministry report says that from 1997 to 2007, the birthrate per 1,000 people dropped to 9.2 from 10.5. In the same period, the State of Health of the Serbian Population report stated, the average age grew to 41.1 from 39.2 years. Average age increasing in Serbia Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic said that heart and coronary diseases were the leading causes of death, which, combined with malignant tumors, accounted for three quarters of deaths in Serbia. The main risk factors for chronic, non-contagious diseases were smoking, alcohol, obesity, poor diet, insufficient physical activity, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, he explained. From 2000 to 2006, the percentage of overweight adults went up to 18.3 from 16.2 percent. Milosavljevic also said that the report showed one quarter of children aged 16 consume alcohol regularly, boys significantly more often than girls.
