BELGRADE The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has requested an emergency parliamentary debate on the country’s future if the EU integration process was suspended. “The LDP does not accept giving up on an opportunity to get a date (for the start of the EU) negotiations,” the party has released. LDP calls for emergency debate on dialogue “A failure to get the date is not only a formal postponement of the beginning of the negotiations and it is not a bureaucratic trifle. This will be an excuse for a new self-isolation of Serbia and a source of disappointment that will push the country for a long time in a complete blockade of reforms and economic and social disaster,” reads the release. The Liberals point out that a country with a million unemployed citizens and the highest emigration rate of young and educated people in Europe had no right to “lose another second in reforms”. “That is why it is necessary for the Serbian parliament to hold a session and decide on the issue. It is an obligation of all parties to do everything so Serbia would get a date after all, open the EU membership negotiations and start a period of a normal political life,” the LDP stressed. The party requests that “there are no speculations with ratings, myths and expectations of a part of the government and public poisoned by the daily propaganda but that a decision is made in the Kosovo negotiations that will allow the country to breathe”. The LDP noted that the current political model had been exhausted, adding that the “Kosovo knot” needed to be cut and that “by giving into deceptions, fears and pressures that exist inside the government to run away from responsibility the country will be lead into an unbearable instability”. The party stressed that it did was not looking to score points by constantly warning that the government’s confused policy and unclear list of priorities would run the country into the stone wall and that it wanted to help “because Serbia must not stop and give into fatalism and self-deception that months and years are not important and that there is plenty of time”.
