The SPS has left a coalition with the SRS and DSS in Beocin municipality to form a coalition with the pro-EU parties. If a new ruling majority is formed in Beocin by the end of the month, that will be the first time in the municipality’s history that the local authorities will have been constituted by the so-called pro-EU parties. Vojvodina: DS-SPS at municipal level The new ruling majority yesterday submitted a motion to call an emergency session of the Beocin Municipal Assembly, where Speaker Zoran Tesic from the Serb Radical Party (SRS) will be replaced by Bogdan Cvejic from the Democratic Party (DS). The decisive step in changing the local power structure was taken by the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) local board, which respected the recommendation from the party’s leadership to leave the coalition partners with whom they had formed a ruling majority after the May 11 elections. “Given that the DS achieved absolute power in the province, and that there was a place for the SPS in the provincial government, then I can’t see why there would be any obstacles for the local SPS to form a coalition with these partners at municipal level as well,” explained Masan Minic, a member of the SPS municipal board. “The most important thing for us is to create conditions for new investment and job creation. There are over 2,000 unemployed people in the municipality,” said Sava Svircevic from the local DS. Beocin residents had little to say about the new municipal majority, as they expect every local government to enhance their standard of living, which is nowhere near as good as statistical data on average salaries indicates. The agreement between the SPS and DS comes in the wake of the recent formation of governments in Temerin and Titel, and on the eve of autumn negotiations in Zabalj, Kikinda and other places in Vojvodina. “I expect the ruling majority to be formed in Kikinda and some other municipalities, so that by the end of September, most of Vojvodina’s municipalities will have pro-European ruling majorities,” said Dusan Elezovic from the DS.
