In the event of the DSS boycotting the presidential elections, the DS would review its coalition agreement. “If one of the coalition partners shows its willingness to boycott the elections, indeed question supporting its majority coalition partner, those are grounds for reconsidering those relations,” Democratic Party (DS) official Nada Kolundzija told reporters outside parliament. DS to reconsider relations in event of DSS boycott In Kolundzija’s opinion, the stability of any coalition implies mutual support, on the basis of which the coalition was formed in the first place. She believes that responsibility for those very important state tasks that lie ahead and that were the principles on which the coalition was originally formed will prevail, and that there will not be any cause for any great upheavals. Meanwhile, the DS leadership is seriously considering breaking up the coalition with the Democratic Party of Serbia, in the event of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica’s party openly boycotting the presidential elections, daily Vecernje Novosti understands. After their decision to call the presidential ballot unilaterally, the DS are prepared to go all the way: should Kostunica fail to back President Boris Tadic, they will carry on the campaign even without the DSS’s support, convinced that Tadic can win a second mandate. However, as far as the prime minister is concerned, Kosovo is the only issue that matters until after the Security Council session tomorrow, and he will announce his position on the elections at the weekend, it is reported. He will have four options: 1) support Tadic; 2) support junior coalition partner Velimir Ilic, should he choose to run; 3) remain silent and watch things unfold; 4) openly boycott the elections, and call on DSS supporters to do likewise. The daily understands that in spite of the DS’s public messages – who wants to join us, great, and who doesn’t, we’ll get along without you – they are impatiently awaiting the DSS’s final decision.
