The second round of voting in the Kosovo municipal elections is under way. The Central Electoral Commission has announced that 539 polling stations with 2095 voting booths will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kosovo local elections round 2 under way This round of elections is not taking place in three northern Kosovo municipalities - Ljeposavic, Zubin Potok and Zvecane – where UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker decided against confirming the results from the first round, following the boycott of the November 17 round by the Kosovo Serbs. This week, Ruecker decided to extend the mandate of the current local authorities in question for another six months. There are a total of 46 candidates standing in the elections in the other municipalities. The main battleground is in Pristina betwen Democratic Union of Kosovo candidate Isa Mustafa and Democratic Party of Kosovo candidate Fatmir Lima. The Kosovo Police Service (KPS) has announced that 7000 of its members will assist, secure and support the Central Election Commission and the OSCE, as organizers of the elections, in the running of today’s ballot. According to KPS spokesman Veton Elshani, the police will be on patrol at all 2095 polling stations. The KPS yesterday assisted in the distribution of election equipment, according to the statement.
