Radovanović appointed public prosecutor
State public prosecutor Slobodan Janković and district public prosecutor Milovan Božović were relieved of their duties by the Serbian parliament yesterday. The opposition criticized the government for waiting until the past minute to make the necessary appointments.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Čedomir Jovanović said the ruling parties divided up positions within the judicial system “along party lines.”
“Is the Serbian judicial system being split along the lines of 'ours' and 'theirs' again? Does one part of the ruling coalition get the prosecutor's office and the other its prosecutor?” Jovanović said.
Justice Minister Dušan Petrović said yesterday he expected the new officials to be named in time, adding that reforms were expected within the judicial system by the beginning of next year.
The reforms are meant to boost the courts’ independence and allow them to function in accordance with international standards.
