Serbs released after "illegal crossing"

A group of 20 Serbs arrested near Podujevo for illegally crossing the administrative line with Kosovo have been freed after their fines were paid. The fine of EUR 4,000 was paid by the municipality of Medvedja and the Serbs were allowed to leave Kosovo. Serbs released after "illegal crossing" Kosovo Police spokesperson Baki Kelani said that the Serbs were treated as persons who illegally entered Kosovo, even though it was known that they were coming to visit a village cemetery nearby. Kosovo border police noticed them crossing at an illegal location and took them into custody, after which they were fined EUR 250 each. The group was held in custody for 15 hours. Family members of the arrested Serbs said that the Kosovo police treated them courteously, and added that the village road the Serbs were using to go to the cemetery has been used for many years for this purpose. The village is located right on the administrative line between Kosovo and central Serbia.
