The Belgrade prosecution is questioning those arrested for participating in the violence at Tuesday night’s protests. Goran Ilic, a public prosecutor at the First Municipal Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, said that initial interrogation of suspects had begun based on the available information and evidence—primarily the analysis of video footage of the clashes that occurred during the protest against Radovan Karadzic’s arrest. Questioning over protest violence under way “Any decision on eventual criminal charges against those who participated in the riots on the streets of Belgrade on Tuesday, July 29, will be taken quickly, as the only way for the prosecution and other institutions to achieve the goals of criminal trial and the protection of the community from violence is to act efficiently,” Ilic told the Tanjug news agency. He stressed that in all cases where legal grounds existed, the prosecution would insist on remanding the suspects in custody. Ilic added that the media could learn more details about the incident from the state public prosecution. State Public Prosecutor Slobodan Radovanovic said earlier that criminal charges would be pressed against those who were responsible for the violence clashes that broke out towards the end of Tuesday night’s demonstration in Republic Square. During the rally organized by the Serb Radical Party, a group of hooligans clashed with police in the center of Belgrade. During the violence, according to Interior Minister Iviza Dacic, 81 people were injured, including 57 police officers. It was also stated that 19 persons had been arrested, some of whom were minors.
