National Employment Service (NSZ) Director Dejan Jovanovic said that there will be a slight decrease in unemployment by the end of 2010. “I expect that through the implemented measures and active employment policies, the economic situation will improve,” he said. Unemployment expected to drop Jovanovic said that even though positive macroeconomic trends are already visible, such as an increase in the growth of the GDP, progress in employment is running late compared to these improvements. “We did not feel the problems of the growth of the unemployment rate as much as some other countries, which had stronger effects of the crisis, but the problem was present in Serbia,” Jovanovic said, adding that the first goal will be to create new jobs. He said that according to the current data of the NSZ, there are 746,000 unemployed persons in Serbia, adding that this number was decreased by 30,000 over the last three months. Jovanovic said that not everyone registered by the NSZ is looking for a job, adding that about 573,000 are actively looking. He said that among the unemployed persons, about 30 percent have a high school education, and about 200,000 are under the age of 30. “Since the beginning of the year, about 80,000 people have found jobs through the NSZ,” he said. Jovanovic said that the unemployment percentage in Serbia is at about 19.2 percent, which is better than the situation in Macedonia and Bosnia, and slightly worse than in Croatia.
