He states that every day of delay has real consequences on the battlefield.

"All allies need to dig deep and deliver results quickly. Every day of delay has real consequences on the battlefield in Ukraine," Stoltenberg said.

"This is a critical moment and it would be a grave, historic mistake to allow (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to win. We cannot allow authoritarian leaders to go through with the use of force, it would be dangerous for all of us," he added as he presented the annual report for 2023.

"Political will is needed"

Emphasizing that NATO members together have the capacity to supply Ukraine with the necessary weapons and ammunition, Stoltenberg says that now it is necessary to show the political will to do so.

NATO provided 99 percent of all military aid to Ukraine last year and continues to provide unprecedented aid, including artillery, ammunition, tanks and armored vehicles, patrol boats, air defenses, helicopters, drones and, for the first time, radars. Long-range missile systems were also delivered, and the Allies agreed to send F16 jets.

"Ukraine needs more help now"

"Unprecedented assistance from NATO allies helped Ukraine to survive as a sovereign, independent state, but that is not enough. Ukraine now needs more help. Ukrainians do not lack courage, they are running out of ammunition," Stoltenberg said.

He added that support for NATO is extremely strong on both sides of the Atlantic.

"If the vote were held today, the vast majority of allied countries would vote for NATO, for example in the US only 13 percent would vote against. More than 80 percent of citizens in NATO member states believe that North America and Europe must continue to work together for our common security," said Stoltenberg and pointed out that two thirds of citizens want continued aid to Ukraine.
