Former Trump ally: "He betrayed Republicans"

Former Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump following the Republicans' heavy defeat in the congressional elections. The former close Trump ally accused him of betraying voters, concealing documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, starting a war with Iran and driving up the cost of living.

"Last night's elections were a total referendum on Trump. He told people to vote as if his name were on the ballot, and that's exactly what they did," Greene wrote on the social media platform X.

Obama: "The American people have sent a message that they want politics that unites, not divides"

Former United States President Barack Obama said today that, through their votes in the midterm elections, the American people had sent a message that they want politics that brings people together rather than divides them.

Democrats take control of both Houses of Congress – What does this mean for Trump?

According to projections, Democrats have won the US midterm elections, securing majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, marking a significant shift in the balance of power in Washington.

A Sky News analysis explains that the Senate consists of 100 members, with two representing each state. Senators serve six-year terms, with one-third of the seats contested every two years.

The US president, however, would still be able to govern through executive orders and retain his presidential veto power. He has said that he expects to use it for "a month or two" before reaching compromises with Democrats.

Overriding a presidential veto requires a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, which Democrats will not have. However, this does not prevent the negative publicity that could result from the spectacle of a president repeatedly overriding the will of Congress.

As noted, Trump will remain president, but he will face a Congress in which Democrats control both chambers, giving the opposition party a much stronger platform to scrutinise his administration.

Congressman Robert Garcia, the leading Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said that "corruption within the Trump family" would be a major focus. He also said that a thorough investigation would be launched into individuals linked to Jeffrey Epstein, as well as issues surrounding the conflict in Iran and attacks on ships in the Caribbean Sea.
