100.000 attacks?

Austria’s new Chief of the General Staff, Harald Vodosek, said today that at least 100,000 hybrid attacks are carried out every day against servers targeting the Austrian military and critical infrastructure, and he blamed Russia for the attacks.

Vodosek told the Vienna-based Der Standard that he currently assesses the threat level to Austria from Moscow’s hybrid warfare as medium to high.

“If an aggressor fails to achieve its war aims, it attacks those supporting the opposing side. This is why we are seeing a series of sabotage attacks in EU and NATO countries, as well as the recent drone incident at Leipzig Airport.

Vodosek stressed that drones and cyberattacks are currently the greatest threats, adding that cyberattacks could disrupt electricity, gas, or water supplies.

“And if a city like Vienna is left without power for a week or two, the consequences are far-reaching. Moreover, power outages in Germany, Italy or other neighboring countries could affect us. All of this is aimed at destabilizing our democratic societies,” Vodosek said.

He argued that Austria, as a “highly efficient society,” has a certain degree of resilience against attacks and can withstand attacks on its political system.

Harald Vodosek, 62, took over as Chief of the General Staff of the Austrian Armed Forces on September 30, succeeding General Rudolf Striedinger, who retired.
