Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 years in prison

The verdict comes after years of legal proceedings, an overturned original conviction and a retrial.

Weinstein, 74, was sentenced Wednesday in Manhattan court after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting Miriam Haley in a 2025 retrial.

Haley worked as a production assistant on the Weinstein-produced reality show Project Runway. She testified during the trial that he invited her to his Manhattan apartment in 2006, where he sexually assaulted her.

At the sentencing hearing, Haley addressed the court and spoke about the impact the assault had had on her life.

“Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault had a devastating impact on my life and my sense of safety, something that may never go away,” she said, according to reports from the courtroom.

She also said that she had endured harassment and humiliation over the past seven years, claiming that Weinstein, his defense team and some podcasters had publicly smeared her. She described her experience since the assault as “already a life sentence.”

Weinstein denies the allegations

Weinstein appeared in court for sentencing in a wheelchair. He again denied sexually assaulting the women who accused him, but addressed Haley and expressed regret for the pain she had suffered.

“I’m sorry for the pain Miriam Haley has suffered, but I must reiterate that I am innocent,” he said in court, according to the Associated Press.

Prosecutors sought a 20-year prison sentence, while the defense requested a lighter sentence, taking into account the more than six years Weinstein had already spent behind bars in connection with the case. The court ultimately sentenced him to 15 years.

Previous 23-year sentence overturned

The case has a long legal history.

In 2020, Weinstein was initially sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York after being found guilty of sexually assaulting Haley and raping actress Jessica Mann in 2013.

However, New York State’s highest court overturned the conviction in 2024 and ordered a new trial, ruling that legal errors had been made during the first trial concerning testimony from other women whose allegations were not part of the specific charges against him.

At the 2025 retrial, the jury again found Weinstein guilty of a sex crime against Haley.

At the same time, the jury acquitted him of the charge involving Kaja Sokola, while it failed to reach a unanimous verdict on the charge of raping Jessica Mann. After a retrial on that charge also ended without a verdict in May 2026, prosecutors dropped the case.

Weinstein also faces further proceedings in California

Weinstein is also facing a separate case in California, where he was convicted in 2022 of rape and sexual assault and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

A California appeals court upheld his conviction this year but overturned the original sentence and ordered a new sentencing hearing after determining that his already-overturned New York conviction had been taken into account when the sentence was imposed.

Weinstein became one of the central figures in the scandal that erupted in 2017, triggering a wave of allegations of sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood and contributing to the spread of the #MeToo movement. More than 80 women have publicly accused him of various forms of sexual misconduct, while he has denied the allegations.
