A deadly attack

At least 40 civilians were killed and many were injured in Israeli airstrikes on the city of Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian media.

Wafa news agency reports that at least eight rockets hit tents in the northwestern part of the city, where displaced Palestinians are housed.

The International Committee of the Red Cross announced that its field hospital in Rafah is receiving a large number of injured, and that other hospitals are also receiving a large number of patients.

Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri described the attack in Rafah as a "massacre."

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they carried out a precise attack on the Hamas compound in the city of Rafah, where senior officials of the Palestinian militant group were gathering, the Times of Israel reports.

The IDF later announced that Yassin Rabia, the head of the West Bank headquarters, and Khaled Najjar, another senior member of the unit, were killed in the strike.
