New fire in Athens; Citizens warned; Injuries reported

A new fire broke out at noon in the Aspropyrgos area near Athens, Greek media reported. A total of 38 firefighters with 14 vehicles have been deployed to battle the blaze, Kathimerini reported.

The fire is burning relatively close to the location where a major blaze broke out earlier, according to a Greek news portal.

In the large fire that broke out earlier today at a commercial building in Aspropyrgos near Athens, 11 people were injured, three of them seriously, and were intubated, Greek authorities said.

According to the fire service, the blaze started around 8 a.m. this morning at a spare parts factory, Protothema reported.

Six people were taken to Thriasio Hospital. Two of them were intubated and are in critical condition, three suffered minor injuries and may be discharged during the day, while one person has already left the hospital.

The remaining five people were taken to a hospital in Attica. One of them was intubated and is in serious condition, and is expected to be transferred to the Burns Unit, while four others arrived at the hospital on their own with respiratory problems.

According to reports, the fire broke out under unknown circumstances at a spare parts factory. A total of 75 firefighters, 20 vehicles, and helicopters are involved in extinguishing the blaze, while residents have been warned not to approach the area due to toxic substances.

The Fire Service said that, according to available information, a propane tank truck is located inside the company’s premises, causing additional concern.

A team from the West Attica Fire Investigation Unit has been sent to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
