Iran and the U.S. close to an agreement?

The U.S. and Iran, although they have not held a second round of talks in Pakistan, are not as far from a possible agreement as it may seem at first glance, CNN reports, citing sources familiar with the mediation process.

According to the same sources, intensive diplomacy is continuing behind closed doors. Talks are currently focused on a gradual process in which the first step of a possible agreement would be a return to the pre-war situation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions or transit fees.

The issue of Iran’s nuclear program, which both the United States and Israel have cited as a justification for the war, is expected to be addressed in a later phase of the negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump previously stated that any agreement would require Iran to give up its uranium stockpiles, which are nearly sufficient for nuclear weapons, as well as to completely abandon enrichment—conditions Tehran has consistently refused to accept.

According to the same sources, mediators are increasing pressure on both sides to reach a deal, and the next few days are considered crucial.

The entire process still faces the possibility that the United States could withdraw from the negotiations and return to a military option.
