U.S. military officials are developing new plans for potential strikes on Iranian capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz in the event that the ceasefire with Iran collapses, multiple sources said.

According to those reports, options are being considered for “dynamic targeting” of Iranian capabilities in and around the Strait of Hormuz, the southern part of the Persian Gulf, and the Gulf of Oman—including small fast boats, mine-laying vessels, and other assets regarded as Iran’s asymmetric capabilities, CNN reported.

Sources say such strikes would be aimed at preventing a potential closure of key maritime routes, which would have significant consequences for the global economy and energy trade.

The report also states that part of Iran’s coastal missile capabilities remain operational, and that Iran possesses a large number of small vessels that could be used in attacks on shipping.

According to the same sources, U.S. military planners are also considering broader options, including strikes on dual-use infrastructure and energy facilities, as well as the potential targeting of certain military leaders and structures said to be obstructing negotiations.

Sources also said that the U.S. military maintains a significant presence in the Middle East, including aircraft carriers and other naval forces, while some operations involve intercepting and boarding vessels linked to Iran.

Officials at the Pentagon say the military is prepared to present a range of options to the U.S. president, while emphasizing that the administration prefers a diplomatic solution, although the possibility of continued military operations remains open.
