School shooting: One student dead, eight injured PHOTO/VIDEO

The attacker was arrested immediately after the incident, according to the local government, as reported by the Argentine portal Nasion.

Six students sustained minor injuries while fleeing the scene and are all out of life-threatening danger.

Two other students were taken to the Regional Hospital "Rafaela," one of whom is in serious but stable condition.

According to one of the students, the attacker was seen coming out of the bathroom with a gun and firing into the air, prompting everyone to flee.

Classes have been suspended

The incident occurred while students were waiting for the national flag to be raised, a daily ritual at the school in the town of about 16,000 residents.

Authorities believe the attacker used a shotgun. Students have been sent home temporarily, and classes are on hold.

The identities of the attacker and the victims have not been immediately released.

 

Judicial authorities have announced that the 15-year-old boy who opened fire at Mariano Moreno School in San Cristóbal will not face criminal prosecution under current legislation. The new Juvenile Criminal Procedure Law, which sets criminal responsibility starting at age 14, has not yet come into effect and will be applied in 180 days.

Under existing regulations, the maximum sentence a minor can receive is 15 years in a specialized juvenile detention center, with rehabilitation programs, until they reach adulthood, at which point a possible transfer to the regular prison system may be considered.

Authorities will also investigate how the boy obtained the firearm and whether any responsibility lies with his parents or other adults in his immediate environment.

Carolina Morelli, the municipal education coordinator, stated that the attacker had been a good student with calm behavior, as confirmed by his classmates. Morelli emphasized the need for stronger educational and socio-emotional support for students, including monitoring their family and social environment.
