Nothing from the US-Russia agreement; "This is the end – we will not be able to win"
The United States will not be able to achieve parity with Russia in modern weaponry technology in the coming years, which makes Washington’s delay in extending the New START a major mistake, said military analyst and former intelligence officer Scott Ritter.
“This is the end. We will compete with Russia in weaponry. We will not be able to win. You see, Putin already said back in 2022 that he had acquired new weapons. And today, they are on combat readiness. Russia has already won this race. They are already at the finish line. This is the reality. We are entering a military competition that we have already lost. And we will go bankrupt trying to catch up,” Ritter said in an interview with Garland Nixon on his YouTube channel.
According to him, all of this should have prompted the American side to quickly conclude an agreement with Moscow.
“The Russians do not need an agreement. They would like to sign one, but they don’t need it because they have plenty (of modern nuclear weapons – ed.). But the United States desperately needed this agreement. And those who advised Donald Trump have, in an unprecedented way, betrayed all of America,” Ritter added.
The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) expired on Thursday. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia is ready to continue complying with the treaty’s limitations for one year after that date.
He explained that the steps to uphold the START provisions would be effective if the United States reciprocated in kind. According to media reports, US President Donald Trump called the Russian leader’s proposal a good idea.
