Red alert is sounding, storm is approaching: Collapse in France, Britain, and Scotland; Flights canceled PHOTO
French meteorological services have issued a red alert for the Manche department and the English Channel coast due to the approaching storm Goretti, while the northwest of the country has been placed under an orange warning level due to strong winds.
The warnings take effect tonight, BFM reported.
Storm Goretti will affect the English Channel coast from the early evening hours, and the red alert will be in effect from 9 PM to 3 AM.
Wind gusts of 150 to 160 kilometers per hour are expected along the coast and up to 130 and 140 kilometers per hour inland. The Atlantic coast will also be hit by strong winds.
A total of 24 departments will be under an orange wind warning, including the entire northwest of France and the Île-de-France region.
Meteo-France has warned that the alert level during the day could be further increased in certain departments of Normandy, especially in Calvados and the Seine-Maritime.
Rail traffic suspended
Due to the storm, rail traffic in Normandy will be completely halted starting tonight.
The national railway SNCF announced that a gradual resumption of service is expected only by Friday afternoon, and that disruptions, delays, and cancellations of trains are possible today and tomorrow in other parts of the country as well.
Additionally, three departments—Upper Savoy, Savoy, and Vaud—remain under an orange warning due to snow and ice.
Meteo-France forecasts snowfall in the Northern Alps, with expected accumulations of 10 to 20 centimeters of snow in the inner valleys of Savoy, while ice in the Vaud region poses the main problem on the roads.
Meteorological services also warn of the risk of strong western waves in the English Channel, particularly around 11 PM, as well as the possibility of local coastal flooding.
Citizens are advised to exercise caution and limit travel in the affected areas.
A series of warnings in the United Kingdom
The UK Meteorological Service has issued a series of weather warnings due to snow as storm Goreti approaches the country.
Yellow snow warnings cover large parts of East Anglia, the Midlands, the North, and the Southwest, as well as nearly all of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, reports Sky News.
For much of central Wales, the Midlands, and parts of the North, a warning has been issued with forecasts of up to 30 centimeters of snow.
Meteorologists warn that drivers may become stranded, while railway and air passengers face likely delays and cancellations.
Rural communities are also at risk, with potential power outages and disruptions to other services, including mobile networks.
Cornwall is particularly affected, with winds reaching up to 145 kilometers per hour and the risk of building damage, while large waves pose the threat of injuries and life risks along the coast.
Chief Meteorologist of the Meteorological Service, Neil Armstrong, described storm Goreti as a “multi-hazard event,” while meteorologist Alex Burkil warns that snowfall of 20 centimeters or more could cause serious disruptions.
Schools closed in Scotland
In northern Scotland, many schools remain closed for the fourth day.
In Aberdeenshire, more than 150 schools are closed, while villagers in Insch described the situation as “one of the worst winters in the past 25 years” with nearly 30 centimeters of snow.
