New escalation despite ceasefire: Israel carries out strikes deep inside Lebanon
Israel carried out new strikes in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire, just days after peace talks were held in Rome.
According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA), Israeli forces fired machine guns overnight at the Wadi al-Saluki area in the southern Nabatieh Governorate. The town of Mansouri was targeted with artillery fire, while Kfar Tebnit was also bombed. The outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa were also subjected to intermittent artillery shelling. There were no official reports of possible casualties or property damage as of yet.
Talks amid the conflict
The latest, seventh round of talks between Lebanon and Israel was held last Thursday in Rome, with the United States acting as mediator. The discussions focused on implementing a framework agreement signed on June 26. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Friday that “positive progress” had been made in Rome on border issues and the exchange of prisoners.
The framework agreement provides for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territory. The withdrawal would begin with a pilot phase in designated areas, while Lebanon would be expected to deploy its army and disarm armed groups, including Hezbollah.
Despite the negotiations, Tel Aviv continues its offensive in Lebanon. According to Lebanese officials, 4,335 people have been killed and 12,277 wounded in attacks since March 2, while more than one million people have been displaced.
