Total drama in Moscow: He detonated explosives when they approached him, near the site of the general's murder
Three people were killed in an explosion in southern Moscow, Russia’s Investigative Committee announced today, and investigators have opened a criminal case.
According to the Investigative Committee, two traffic police officers and one person who was nearby were killed in the explosion, RIA Novosti reported.
Investigative authorities have opened a criminal case and are working to establish all the circumstances of the incident. According to the Investigative Committee, the officers noticed a suspicious person near a service vehicle and approached him with the intention of detaining him, after which he detonated an explosive device, RIA Novosti reported.
According to initial information, two young traffic police officers and a “suspicious individual” who was nearby were killed. The explosion occurred around 1:30 a.m.
The Moscow State Traffic Inspectorate announced that the deceased officers were Police Lieutenants Ilya Klimanov (24) and Maksim Gorbunov (25). Klimanov joined the police in October 2023, while Gorbunov joined in February 2022. Gorbunov is survived by his wife and a nine-month-old daughter, and authorities stated that the families will be provided with the necessary assistance.
Multiple forensic examinations have been announced, including an analysis of the explosive device. Further information on the causes and circumstances of the explosion has not yet been released.
The explosion occurred on Yeletskaya Street in Moscow, not far from a police station, and according to initial information, the suspect detonated the explosive at the moment when police officers were approaching him.
Investigation launched
Investigators are determining the circumstances under which the explosive device was activated, questioning witnesses, and analyzing surveillance camera footage.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against those responsible on charges of attempted murder of police officers and illegal trafficking of explosive materials, authorities said.
According to Russian media reports, it is suspected that the deceased man, approximately 37 years old, was caught while placing an explosive device under a parked police vehicle.
Is it linked to the general’s killing?
Two days ago, a Russian general, Fanil Sarvarov, was killed in a car-bomb explosion in Moscow, near the location where last night’s blast occurred. This was reportedly the third case of a general being killed in Moscow within a year.
