Nobel Peace Prize winner announced – VIDEO

The winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize is María Corina Machado, the leader of the Venezuelan opposition. She received the award for her work in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela, said the President of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jørgen Watne Frydnes.

Machado was born in 1967 and served as a member of the Venezuelan parliament from 2011 to 2014.

Frydnes praised Machado as “a brave and dedicated advocate of peace” who “keeps the flame of democracy alive amid growing darkness.”

It should be noted that a total of 338 nominations were submitted for the prize, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations.

As of 2024, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 105 times to 142 laureates — 111 individuals and 31 organizations.

Among individual laureates, 92 are men and 19 are women.

The youngest laureate to date is Pakistani Malala Yousafzai, who received the prize at age 17 in 2014, while the oldest is Joseph Rotblat, awarded in 1995 at the age of 86 for his work against nuclear weapons.

The 2024 prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, the Japanese Confederation of Atomic and Hydrogen Bomb Victims Organizations, “for their efforts to achieve a world without nuclear weapons.”

The recognition was given in honor of the organization’s decades-long campaign to abolish nuclear weapons and preserve the testimonies of survivors of the U.S. atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

The organization sees its main goals as preventing nuclear war and eliminating nuclear weapons, ensuring government compensation for atomic bomb damage, and improving policies and measures to protect and assist survivors, known as hibakusha.

This year, the Nobel Peace Prize has drawn global media attention due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s desire to be awarded the honor, Reuters recalled.
