A favourite destination for Serbians prepares a festive spectacle: Christmas Market opening dates announced
Aroma of mulled wine, festive lights, decorations and handmade crafts will once again fill the streets of Vienna as the city prepares for the start of Christmas season. This year visitors can look forward to 15 Christmas markets featuring a total of 814 stalls
Traditional Christmas markets will once again transform Vienna's squares and streets into lively gathering places this winter, offering a wide selection of festive decorations, handmade gifts and culinary specialities.
Of the total number of stalls, 198 will be dedicated to food and drinks, allowing visitors to enjoy mulled wine, punch and a variety of seasonal treats.
Particular attention is drawn to locations in front of historic landmarks and in the city's old districts, making Vienna one of Europe's most recognisable winter travel destinations during the Advent season.
Six Christmas Markets worth visiting
Among the best-known locations set to attract tourists again this year are:
- Christmas Market at City Hall (Rathausplatz) – one of the largest and most famous markets in the city, opening on November 13.
- Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace – set in a magnificent historic setting, opening on November 6.
- Old Viennese Christmas Market (Altwiener Christkindlmarkt) – known for its traditional handicrafts and old-world charm, opening on November 14.
- Spittelberg Christmas Market – particularly appealing for its romantic narrow streets, handcrafted products and authentic atmosphere. It opens on November 13.
- Belvedere Christmas Market – located in front of the Baroque palace, opening on November 20.
- Christmas Village at Maria Theresa Square (Maria-Theresien-Platz) – another popular festive destination, opening on November 20.
The festive atmosphere begins as early as November
City officials emphasise that the Christmas markets are an important part of Vienna's Advent season and traditions, as well as a major tourist attraction that draws large numbers of visitors every year.
Due to its diverse offerings, historic locations and festive atmosphere, Vienna is an especially attractive destination for short winter trips, with many tourists planning visits to the Austrian capital in November and December.
This year's offering of 15 Christmas markets and 814 stalls once again highlights the importance of the Christmas season to the city's tourism industry.
