"It's time for a new phase"; Macron threatened Israel
French President Emmanuel Macron today accused Israel of maintaining a "permanent war" in the Gaza Strip and announced a debate in France on economic sanctions against Israel if that country does not end the war in the Gaza Strip.
He assessed that Israel is harming its image in the world, despite the good reaction to the attack by Hamas on the south of Israel on October 7, 2023, French Channel 12 reports.
He repeated that the main priority of France in this matter is the release of the hostages and said that Israel "has the right to defend itself".
"Israel has had so much success in Gaza. Now is the time for a new phase,'' he said.
Macron stated that France wants to recognize the state of Palestine in order to "isolate Hamas" and initiate a series of new obligations.
When asked about the possibility of Israel annexing parts of the occupied West Bank in response to the recognition, Macron pointed out that "the West Bank has nothing to do with Hamas" and that such ideas seek to destroy the possibility of two states.
