End of USAID; Trump shuts down the agency
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is officially in the phase of shutdown, and the responsibility for its closure has been handed over to the director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russ Vought, according to the US Secretary of State.
Vought will oversee the finalization of USAID's termination, while a smaller number of key programs will be transferred to the State Department, Rubio said today in a post on the X social network.
"With the move of fewer core programs to the State Department, USAID is officially in its shutdown phase. Russell is now taking over to oversee the closure of an agency that has long gone off the rails. Congratulations Russ," Rubio said.
This decision, according to Bloomberg, followed Trump's cancellation of nearly five billion dollars worth of foreign aid programs, including funds intended for USAID, an agency criticized by Trump and his administration for wasteful operations and political mistakes.
Although July 1 marked USAID's last day of work, the Trump administration is facing lawsuits from former employees and nongovernmental organizations.
