A strong 8.7-degree earthquake that shook Kamchatka today caused a tsunami on the freshwater Kurile Lake, which is located on the territory of the nature reserve in South Kamchatka, the "Kronotsky" nature reserve announced.
"A tsunami occurred on the Kurile Lake. As incredible as it sounds, a strong earthquake in Kamchatka, the magnitude of which reached and exceeded eight degrees today, caused this event on the freshwater lake," the nature reserve's Telegram channel said.
They remind us that most often in the news, tsunamis are related to seas and oceans.
"However, Kurile Lake is the second largest freshwater lake in the Kamchatka region and the first largest in depth (maximum depth is 316 meters). It is located on the territory of the South Kamchatka Nature Reserve," the nature reserve said.
No one was injured during the tsunami on the lake, and due to the bad weather, helicopters did not bring tourists, so the reserve was mostly occupied by government inspectors, volunteers and travelers who came to the lake on foot during several days of hiking.
"No one was injured during the earthquake, there was no destruction of buildings on the cordons, currently all activities on the territory of the South Kamchatka Federal Nature Reserve are taking place as usual," the statement said.
