Massive attack on Russia; Details of the SBU's big operation leak VIDEO
During the night, Ukrainian forces carried out a major drone attack on Russia's Rostov region, during which the railway infrastructure in the city of Salsk was hit, local Russian officials confirmed.
Videos showing a large fire at the train station also appeared on social networks, and their authenticity was confirmed by the Russian Telegram channel ASTRA.
The Acting Governor of the Rostov Oblast Yuriy Slyusar confirmed via Telegram that a fire broke out at the station, but added that there were no victims in the attack.
The state-owned company "Russian Railways" reported on the damage to overhead contact lines, adding that they are not yet aware of the full extent of the damage.
Russian fighter base attacked?
A source from the Ukrainian intelligence service confirmed to Kyiv Independent that the attack was a joint operation of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Military Intelligence Service (GUR).
According to the source of the Kyiv portal, more than 70 Ukrainian drones hit Morozovsk in the Rostov region, targeting an airbase that houses Russian Su-24, Su-24M and Su-34 fighter jets.
Those planes are used to drop guided bombs on Ukrainian positions and cities along the front line.
Although the full damage is still being assessed, the attack is believed to have been successful, according to Ukrainian media.
The Russian Ministry of Defense admitted that the attack took place, claiming, however, that Russian air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 70 drones over Rostov Oblast, two over Belgorod Oblast and Kursk Oblast, and one each over Volgograd Oblast and occupied Crimea.
Vasily Golubev, the governor of Rostov Oblast, reported the attack on the Morozovsk district, saying that several settlements had been left without electricity. One of the main targets was the railway station, which serves as an important logistics hub for the Russian military.
Significant amounts of cargo intended for military forces are transported through that station.
Attacks on Russian energy and military infrastructure have become a key part of the Ukrainian strategy, with the aim of disrupting the Kremlin's war efforts, and Kyiv claims that these attacks are a legitimate response to Russian aggression and the destruction of Ukrainian infrastructure.
Attacks in other parts of the region
In addition to the railway, drones reportedly hit residential buildings and vehicles in Salsk, a city located about 200 kilometers southeast of the occupied Donetsk region.
Governor Slyusar claims that the driver of one of the attacked cars was killed.
Another fire was reported near the village of Orlovsky, also in Rostov Oblast, where a drone reportedly hit a substation that supplies electricity to the railway infrastructure.
Strategic goal
Rostov Oblast, located along the Sea of Azov and on the border with Ukraine, plays a key role in supplying Russian forces at the battlefield.
Fuel depots, railway infrastructure and ammunition depots inside Russia and in the occupied territories are increasingly targets of Ukrainian attacks.
It is also recalled that seven days ago, on the night of July 21, a Ukrainian attack damaged the railway station building in the village of Kamenolomni in the same region.
