Is the end of the war coming?
Israel and Hamas could reach an agreement on a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages within a week or two, but such an agreement is not expected to be reached in a day, a senior Israeli official said.
Speaking to foreign journalists during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington, he stated that if the two sides agree on a proposed 60-day ceasefire, Israel will use that time to offer a permanent ceasefire that will require the Palestinian militant group to disarm, The Times of Israel reports.
"If Hamas refuses, we will continue military operations," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Netanyahu told a group of hostage families in Washington on Wednesday evening that progress was being made toward a Gaza ceasefire deal.
During the meeting at the Pentagon, Netanyahu and US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth discussed "confronting the Iranian threat, regional security cooperation and strengthening strategic relations between Israel and the United States of America", according to a statement from the office of the Israeli Prime Minister.
Netanyahu should return to Israel tonight, although his schedule may change, the cabinet notes.
