He simply broke down: These are human beings, and that is not enough for you; How much more do you want? VIDEO
Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Mansour broke down in tears during an emotional speech before the UN Security Council, describing the "unbearable suffering" of children in Gaza.
The Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations said the images of hungry and desperate people trying to receive aid were "painful and heartbreaking," according to the UN website.
"These are people, human beings, deprived of water, food, medicine for so long and hanging on for life. It is outrageous to see this situation and you still do not act," he said.
Mansour, pointing to the members of the Security Council, asked "How much more do you want?", adding that the situation in the Gaza Strip makes the Palestinian people "furious".
The ambassador noted that the UN aid plan, with proven capacity on the ground, remains the only viable plan for aid delivery and has all the necessary safeguards in place.
"But the real concern is how to get rid of the Palestinians by killing, starving and destroying Gaza so they have no choice but to leave if they want to live," Mansour said.
Sigrid Kaag, the UN's interim special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, said the man-made crisis unfolding in Gaza had "plunged civilians into the abyss".
"Since the collapse of the ceasefire in March, civilians are constantly under fire, confined to ever smaller spaces and deprived of life-saving assistance. Israel must stop the devastating attacks on civilian life and infrastructure," Kaag said.
At the same time, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon accused the UN of "spreading panic", claiming that Israel was "facilitating" the entry of aid into Gaza.
