The head of French diplomacy, Jean-Noël Barrot, said today that no one will dictate France's position on the recognition of a Palestinian state, adding that Paris believes in a permanent political solution for the Middle East region.

As he said in his speech in parliament, that solution should be in the interest of Israel and the Palestinians, BFMTV reported.

Reacting to the recent statements of his Israeli colleague Gideon Sa'ar, who threatened unilateral measures against countries that recognize the Palestinian state, Barrot said that no one will dictate France's position on the matter.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced in early April that France could recognize a Palestinian state in June during a conference on Palestine that he will co-chair with Saudi Arabia in New York.

"We have to move towards recognition, so we will do that in the coming months," he said after returning from Egypt.

Back in February 2024, Macron stated that recognizing a Palestinian state is not a taboo for France.

So far, 147 countries out of 193 UN members have recognized Palestine, and of that number, 10 are from the EU, BFMTV reminded.

In April 2024, the USA vetoed the admission of Palestine as a full member of the UN, while in May of last year, the spokesman of former President Joseph Biden said that he was against the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.
