Horror: A vehicle crashed into a children's camp, several dead and wounded; Helicopters raised PHOTO/VIDEO
Four children between the ages of 4 and 18 were killed and several others were injured when a vehicle crashed into a building used by a children's camp in the state of Illinois, the BBC reports.
Police said the victims from the YNOT After School Camp range in age from four to 18 years old.
According to media reports, the vehicle "struck several people in front of a building in the town of Chatham" on Monday afternoon, then continued through the building itself, injuring more people inside, before exiting on the opposite side. It is still unclear whether the strike was intentional.
Several injured persons, including children, were transported to the hospital by ambulances and helicopters. Illinois State Police said the driver was not injured, but was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Police responded to a call about the incident around 3:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. EDT) on Monday. Three of the four victims were killed in front of the building, while one person was killed inside the building.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker posted on social media X that his administration is closely monitoring the situation:
"Let's support this community tonight as we await new information about the accident," he wrote.
Chatham is a village with about 14,000 inhabitants, located about 3 miles from the state capital, Springfield.
