Djokovic has huge motivation to return to the Top 10
Novak Djokovic is no longer among the world’s top 10 tennis players, bringing one of the most impressive streaks in the history of the ATP rankings to an end.
The Serbian tennis player has dropped out of the ATP Top 10 for the first time since July 9, 2018. This brings to an end a streak that lasted more than eight years, during which Djokovic was continuously part of the elite group of players in world tennis.
Djokovic was the first tennis player to reach an extraordinary number of weeks ranked among the world’s top 10, as well as at even higher positions.
When it comes to the number of weeks spent at different ranking positions and higher spots, Djokovic dominates almost the entire table. He spent 428 weeks ranked No. 1 in the world, while Roger Federer held the top spot for 310 weeks.
Djokovic also holds the record for the number of weeks spent in the Top 2, Top 3, Top 4, Top 5, Top 6, Top 7 and Top 8. Federer surpasses him only when it comes to the amount of time spent in the Top 9 and Top 10.
The Serbian ace is just nine weeks away from completing a unique achievement in the ATP rankings. If he returns to the Top 10 and spends that period among the world’s best, he will overtake the Swiss player in the final two categories as well.
In other words, Djokovic would then hold the record for the most weeks ranked from No. 1 through No. 10.
The comparison with Federer is particularly interesting. Djokovic has spent a total of 968 weeks in the Top 10, while the Swiss was ranked among the top 10 for 959 weeks. Rafael Nadal has accumulated 912 weeks.
