Fonseca honest after the biggest win of his career: "I wish Federer were the GOAT, but Novak is the greatest"
Young Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca once again demonstrated the immense respect he has for Novak Djokovic, admitting after his major victory that he considers the Serbian star the greatest tennis player of all time.
Although he grew up cheering for Roger Federer, João Fonseca had no doubts when discussing the GOAT debate.
“Djokovic is definitely an idol in this sport. Him, Roger... I'm a Roger fan, but I know Djokovic is the GOAT. I wish it were Roger, but that's life.”
The Brazilian then spoke about the emotions he felt after one of the biggest victories of his career so far.
“It was certainly an incredible experience, and I feel grateful for it. When the match ended, it was hard for me to realize it was over. I kept asking myself, ‘Did I really win?’”
He particularly highlighted the way he played the decisive fifth set.
“In the fifth set, I wasn't thinking at all—I was just playing. I'm extremely happy,” Fonseca said.
His comments are sure to resonate with tennis fans, especially the part where he openly acknowledged that, despite his admiration for Federer, he believes the title of the greatest player of all time belongs to Novak Djokovic.
