After more than three hours of a tough battle, the Swiss player managed to turn things around and break Djere, despite being 41 years old.

As previously announced, this is his “final dance” at the Australian Open, and, unfortunately for Serbian tennis fans, Lazslo was merely a stop along the way.

The Serbian ace played excellently at times, especially at the start of the match, but later faltered under pressure, and the overall impression he left was not enough to bring the seasoned veteran to his knees.

It started very well for Djere, who, after an initial “testing of strengths,” first saved Wawrinka’s set point and then managed to get the first break, at a crucial moment.

The 11th game was being played when he attacked Wawrinka’s serve and gained the advantage, which he converted in the next game by taking his second set point.

The second set was also very close, with small margins deciding it in Wawrinka’s favor, again with a one-break difference.

In fact, he made the break much earlier, in the fourth game, and then successfully held his serve, although it took him four set points to even the overall score.

The third set was almost a repeat, with Wawrinka’s break coming in the seventh game and no real answer from the other side.

The experienced Swiss player turned the match around, putting the full pressure on Djere, who managed to fight back.

In the fourth set, the young man from Senta got a break for 4–2, but the pressure on his shoulders proved too much, and he immediately lost his advantage.

Wawrinka regained momentum and kept attacking Djere, who held on until the tiebreak—but no further.

Carried by strong support from the stands, the 40-year-old veteran started the tiebreak 3–0, then 4–1, and very quickly closed out the match in his favor.

In the second round, Wawrinka will face the winner of the match between 17th seed, Czech Jiří Lehečka, and French qualifier Arthur Gea.
