Major weather shift: Half a metre of snow on the way

Serbia is expected to experience mostly cloudy and relatively cool weather through the end of this week and the beginning of next week, with rain and snowfall in the high mountains, the State Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia has forecast.

"From the middle of next week, dry weather with partial clearing is expected," the State Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia (RHMZ) stated.

Meteorologist Marko Čubrilo is forecasting mostly sunny but increasingly cold weather over the coming days, with occasional light rain.

According to his forecast, a more significant deterioration in weather conditions is possible between November 1 and 5, with heavier rainfall, particularly in the eastern parts of the region, while snow is expected in mountainous areas.

From November 5 until around November 10, mostly dry but relatively cold weather will prevail. After that, another deterioration is possible, accompanied by further cooling.

Čubrilo points out that, for now, there are no indications of strengthening Atlantic air currents until around November 13 that could bring warmer weather.

"Until the weekend, skies will remain mostly cloudy and generally dry, with only occasional light rain, while light snowfall is possible above 1,300 metres. Daytime temperatures will mostly range from 7 to 14 degrees Celsius.

Over the weekend, the weather will remain mostly cloudy, with increasingly frequent rainfall. A more significant deterioration, bringing heavier rain, is possible on Sunday, when a cyclone is expected to develop over Sicily.

In that scenario, the cyclone would move slowly across the Ionian Sea towards Greece, affecting weather conditions in our region, particularly in the eastern and central parts," Čubrilo wrote on his Facebook profile, adding:

"Since the centre of this system is expected to remain east of our region, the entire area would find itself in its cold sector, with temperatures significantly below average, accompanied by strong northerly winds and strong to gale-force bora winds along the Adriatic coast.

If the cyclone follows the current projected path, as predicted by the vast majority of numerical weather models, substantial rainfall is expected, particularly across Montenegro, much of Serbia, eastern Croatia, and eastern and central Bosnia and Herzegovina, while western areas will receive less precipitation."

Where the heaviest snowfall is expected

According to his forecast, the mountains of Montenegro, western and southwestern Serbia, as well as eastern and central Bosnia and Herzegovina, could see the formation of a significant snow cover, particularly at altitudes above 900 metres, with accumulations reaching 25 to 50 centimetres.

"The snow line would drop to around 800 metres above sea level. At the beginning of next week, daytime temperatures will mostly range between 4 and 8 degrees Celsius.

Precipitation is not expected to stop, and cloud cover is not expected to decrease until next Wednesday. By then, under the current weather patterns, most of Montenegro, Serbia, eastern Croatia, and eastern and central Bosnia and Herzegovina could receive between 20 and 80 mm of rainfall. This would significantly reduce the deficit in surface and deep-soil moisture.

We will see over the coming days whether the current weather pattern holds," Čubrilo said.
